In today’s digitally interconnected world, technology has profoundly influenced the construction and presentation of personal identities. This visual exploration investigates and critiques the complex and multifaceted impact of social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram in shaping contemporary curated identity formation and expressions. While this offers a plethora of opportunities for self-expression and community engagement, it also raises concerns about the potential for manipulation, artificiality and the erosion of culture and authenticity in identity construction.

Delving into the positive and negative aspects of curated contemporary identities, the thesis investigates cultural progression along two main lines: monoculture and metaculture. By exploring individuals in both Cape Town, South Africa and Zurich, Switzerland, the thesis’ research unpacks the extent of influence from the online realms to the physical.
