Design Unfolds
The symposium «Design Unfolds: Contemporary Creative Strategies from Appropriation to Collaboration» was convened by Sarah Owens and took place in Spring 2013 at Zurich University of the Arts. Over the course of one day, voices from the fields of design, internet activism, media theory, politics and cultural theory discussed the intra- and interdisciplinary change brought about by digital technologies and new means of production. Speakers included Aram Sinnreich, Wenny Teo, Sarah Kueng, Andrea Goetzke, Thomas Lommée,
and Mario Minale.
The publication «Design Unfolds» collects short statements, made by each symposium speaker, that served as a basis for debate. The statements are accompanied by a visual essay contemplating the nature of various forms of copying and appropriation. The second part of the publication contains three essays by Manuela Pfrunder, Simon Reynolds and Mischa Senn. They add further dimensions to the discussion surrounding the politics of appropriation and collaboration by considering the creative process, mechanisms within creative communities, and issues of demarcation and legislation.
