Seeing Volume 4

Seeing is a series of books that contemplates the peripheries of what we consider visually perceptible, comprehensible, or expressible. If what we find here are images, then they attempt to elude our awareness. They may appear volatile, fleeting, impermeable, enigmatic, disquieting, inferior, or irrelevant, and therefore we tend to spurn or disregard them. Each book in this series assembles contributions that navigate a constellation of related ideas, allowing a reciprocal meditation on and renewed attention to what usually remains hidden from our gaze.

The fourth volume of Seeing assembles contributions that approach these constellations from within, as acts of visual attention rather than philosophical arguments. Developed in response to two seminars in the MA Visual Communication program at Zurich University of the Arts—the first tracing hauntology, lost futures, and speculative imagination through science fiction, cyberpunk, and ecofiction; the second investigating altered perception, animal minds, xeno-intelligence, and posthuman cognition—the visual and textual essays collected here do not illustrate the themes outlined above so much as enact them. They inhabit these questions rather than resolving them, exploring the limits of perception, the instability of memory, the opacity of nonhuman minds, and the strange temporalities through which futures and pasts continue to haunt the present. Together, these works suggest that the world itself is always multiple: differently perceived, differently inhabited, and never fully available to any single observer.
