Writing & Reflection

2 ECTS

This module explores various forms of writing in academic settings so that students will be able to write academic essays. It includes short writing assignments that help students become familiar with basic concepts of academic writing: close reading; argumentation; organization of arguments; and communication of ideas in clear and effective prose. Strategies for reading and analyzing complex texts are also discussed.

In a second part, students consider the following questions: What are my underlying assumptions and worldviews when I choose to write the way I write? Is the way I write conditioning the way I research, and vice versa? Should I separate writing and theorizing from my practice-based research, or see them as a whole? Where do I, the author or my research, belong in the academic text?

With our attention and sensitivity sharpened by this enquiry, students discuss writing modes and devices, read together and finalize an essay. The aim is not to look for prescriptions and formulas, instead students should allow themselves to be affected by whatever their writing holds.
