The research focus “Visual Culture(s)” within the research unit Visual Communication explores the multifaceted and dynamic realm of images, encompassing a broad spectrum beyond traditional art forms. Our research investigates the diverse ways in which images shape and are shaped by society, culture, and individual perception, and is interdisciplinary in nature by engaging with literature, film, photography, anthropology, sociology, and media studies. We consider not only the production and reception of visual images but also the complex interplay between the act of seeing and the gaze. As such, our research constitutes a critical inquiry into the visual phenomena that shape our understanding and experience of the world.
