Being a governmental institution, the child protection system concerns all citizens. Thus, understanding and debate at the individual, mediatic and political levels are necessary for it to be preserved and improved.
Yet, foster care is a complex system often opaque to the general public. Documents on the subject are in many cases only tackled from a particular angle and/or targeted to professionals.
How can visual communication create accessibility and engagement with such a topic?
This thesis explores illustration and storytelling strategies as tools to create empathy in the reader while conveying complexity and different points of view. The background work is based on testimonies, interviews and scientific publications.
Two books are presented as results of this study.

Als staatliche Institution betrifft das Kinderschutzsystem alle Bürger:innen. Damit es erhalten und verbessert werden kann, sind Verständnis und Diskussion in der Gesellschaft notwendig.
Doch das Pflegekinderwesen ist ein komplexes System, das für die breite Öffentlichkeit oft undurchschaubar ist. Dokumente zum Thema werden oft nur aus einem bestimmten Blickwinkel betrachtet und/oder richten sich an Fachleute.
Wie kann visuelle Kommunikation Zugänglichkeit zu und Auseinandersetzung mit einem solchen Thema schaffen?
Basierend auf Aussagen, Interviews und wissenschaftlichen Studien, untersucht diese Arbeit Strategien der Illustration und des Storytellings als Werkzeuge, um Empathie beim Leser zu wecken und gleichzeitig Komplexität und unterschiedliche Sichtweisen zu vermitteln.
Zwei Bücher werden als praktische Ergebnisse aus dieser Studie vorgestellt.
