cinema | to | graphic
How can the practice of graphic arts learn from formal film language and how can one medium be translated into another?
Each formal element of film practice can, by means of film stills, be visually analysed in its composition. This research project is based on such an analysis, as well as on a study of the characteristics of the media of film and book.
The result of the project is the publication series «cinema | to | graphic» which affords analysis of the transformation from film to book, and therefore enables a new approach for graphic artists, cinephiles and filmmakers. The first edition deals with the formal element of «Surcadrage». These are shots that contain a formal frame and contribute to a confining mood in the film, and were as such of particular interest in the analysis of the film’s translation into a book.
