Ecologies of Matter
Ecologies of Matter is a further development of the MA project Speaking Bread: Relationships beyond Materiality, by Carolina Márquez Bernard. In this project, she will introduce new perspectives on the modern position of humans in the so-called natural world. For that, she is committed to investigate the contribution of tradition and cultural heritage in the construction of future sustainable environments. And propose craftsmanship and the making process as the key for overcoming the limitations and differences between species, offering new realities in the understanding of the material world.
Márquez will research these contexts by the means of design to help us imagine new immersive fields of relationality between species—human and non-human, which can open up new possibilities in the way we think, act and feel with our surroundings personally and professionally. She will focus on theoretical and academic research, and use phenomenological data and ethnographic studies, to explore material consciousness through its meanings and socio-ecological contributions. The general objective of her participation in the Junior Research in Design Program 2023 is to set these methods in a framework of materiality, anthropological development, and design.
