Zentrum Paul Klee
As part of a collaboration between the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern and the Visual Communication programme at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), students developed typographic posters for the exhibition Schwitters: Avant-Garde Maverick. The works were based on Kurt Schwitters’ well-known poem An Anna Blume, which the students reinterpreted through design.
Kurt Schwitters (1887–1948) is considered one of the most important figures of the international artistic avant-garde of the interwar period. The exhibition at the Zentrum Paul Klee explores the many facets of Schwitters’ oeuvre—from Dadaist collages and the reconstruction of his Merzbau to naturalistic portraits and landscape paintings. At the same time, it examines his creative resilience in exile and his role as an independent artist and writer moving between the various currents of modernism.
The typographic posters created as part of the collaborative project form part of the exhibition and are presented there to a broad public. The project offered students the opportunity to engage closely with Schwitters’ poetic and typographic practice and to present their work within a museum context.
