Real Material — A workshop on exhibiting

Students of the Master of Arts in Design — Visual Communication program have been experimenting with exhibition formats, taking their diverse work-in-progress as point of departure. Archival finds, transcultural encounters or disturbing emotional states have become their “material” to start from.

Exhibiting emphasizes something and relates to a context at the same time. Often, this ambiguity provokes questions: Which way of staging or hiding material seems appropriate? To what kind of reality does it refer? And: should an exhibition be perceived as an offer to initiate social change, or contemplation, or to establish a critical distance? The workshop contributions deal with experiences that are mediated through various kind of materials in a broad sense: be it archival images from a not so distant past, language and typography, or food and fabric. Thus, the individual works engage with real material and transform it through temporary installations at the exhibition space.
